When I first started this blog, I was an unemployed costumer attempting to create period gowns and costumes with very limited means. Although now employed, I still try to be as thrifty as possible. I am still "The Broke Costumer"!

In addition to posts about the outfits I make on a budget, this blog includes short research articles on fashion, history, accessories, styles, or whatever interests me at the moment.

I hope you enjoy my journey into the land of inexpensive costuming and short articles.

Yay for Pink Plaid!

I have finally started my 1875 pink plaid  gown I have been waiting to make!  Here is a reminder of what my inspiration photo looks like:  I purchased some pink satin to make some contrast ruffles, but I didn't want the shiney look.  I am using the back side of the satin for my ruffles.  I edged the ruffles in gray bias.  I don't have enough plaid to go around again, so across the top of the top pink ruffle I will be adding a pretty gray trim. I will also add trim across the top of the smaller apron ruffle.  As soon as I do that, the skirt will be finished!  Then on to the bodice.   Here is a picture of my progress on the skirt, without the trim on the top ruffles:

I have also started cutting out my Secret Santa Titanic gown!  I changed my mind again as the first pattern I wanted to use isn't available at the moment.  So, this is the pattern I am now using.  Its the pink one.  For the tunic part I have a pretty embroidered net that I want to look similar to this photo.  I went to Los Angeles again with Val and found a beauiful blue grey dull satin for the under dress and I also got my white embroidered netting there.  I didn't see anything I wanted for the sash and bodice inset.   About a week later I found a pretty dark blue/green that will be perfect.    Here are the fabrics.

I attended an Edwardian hat workshop yesterday and learned all kinds of hat decorating tricks.  I have a white large brim hat I am decorating to match.

Again, thank you Secret Santas!  This one's for you.

  1. I LOVE the pink plaid! I've always had a weakness for pink plaid, I'm so happy to see someone making a bustle gown out of it!
I can't wait to see both of these projects finished. :D
